Last May, I wrote about the Vancouver School Board, and the news that it had rejected the budget. One of the reasons given for rejecting the budget was that it would have led to school closures and program cuts, including cuts to the gifted program. The deadline of June 30th passed.
Yesterday, we learned that all nine members of the Vancouver School Board were fired by the Minister of Education, as explained in the Globe and Mail Article: Conflict hits breaking point as B.C. fires Vancouver School Board trustees.
Parents have put together a petition, and many questions remain unanswered about why this action was taken. An interim chair has been appointed, and parents have been assured that no schools will be closed in the near future. This is a distressing situation so let’s watch to see what happens next.
